Tomorrow morning as you wake up and roll out of bed, gently limping toward your first cup of coffee, itching that embarrassing spot, I want you to remember: you are the gorgeous main character of your life.
As the cream swirls and the kids yell down about missing socks and uncharged phones, what's the soundtrack playing in the background?
If you had to give me the synopsis of the current storyline in the epic movie production of Kaley, what would it be?
Tell me about your character - what's she going through? What's her style? What are the big stressors and challenges in her life and what are the oh-so-quirky and endearing ways she deals with it all?
What's the big lesson of the moment and where are the perfectly-arranged montages of the ups and downs along the way?
If you've never thought about it before, I'd like you to consider embodying Main Character Energy for the rest of this month. While ALWAYS helpful when it comes to reclaiming your worth, owning and enjoying your story - it's particularly helpful through the holidays.
Let me set the scene:
You're in a line the snakes to the back of your local book/gift superstore, waiting to pay for that one pair of fuzzy cow slippers your sister asked for, for Christmas. Your coat is a bit too tight and you're squirming to get comfortable as you slowly begin to cook to death in your too-tiny cocoon parka. You have the urge to FREAK THE F&*K OUT.
What would you, as the main character, do? Would she find a way to order those slippies on Amazon while in line, dropping everything with a grin, as she skips out the door to the tune of Taylor Swift's Christmas Tree Farm?
Or would she wait patiently, as tiny, hilarious (if painful) images in a waiting montage flash by (coat on/coat off/shirt off/sliding down to the floor/delirium sets in/you start leaning on the person in front of you inline/eyes rolling/stand up straight/start to sink again, etc)? What would the soundtrack to that be?
When you're in Main Character Energy, it's all interesting, and funny, and a lesson in disguise. There's no wrong, there's just the STORY and the über interesting plot twists that belong, uniquely to YOU.
How this can be incredibly friggin helpful through the holidays (besides the obvious, turning a soul-crushing line-up into a "scene"):
1. Compare & Despair: how many times do you get caught up in the storyline of others - comparing your life to that of your best friend or sister-in-law or that girl from high school you hate-follow on Facebook?? No more! When you reclaim main character energy you stop letting someone else take centre stage. You stay focused on your journey, what you most want and how you're getting there - including the very interesting and award-winning set-backs. Others can be side characters - inspiring your next move, challenging you to be better, and cheering you on along the way but there is no comparison. YOU are the star.
2. Complicated Characters: I love nothing more than to inhabit Main Character Energy when I'm confronted with difficult peeps. I like to "pan to the camera" and shrug my shoulders with wide eyes à la Jim in the office (another good one). It keeps it light. Keeps it in perspective and reminds me that, again, these are side characters. I can be understanding and empathetic to their situation - or project full blown GFY energy - but I do NOT need to get embroiled in the drama. That's their story not mine. Side note: even if you do accidentally get involved in the drama and blow things up - it makes for some really great tv! I find more compassion for myself and my missteps when I think of myself as a character, growing and learning and making mistakes along the way.
3. Appreciating the Pivot: Every story needs a plot twist! That's what makes the whole thing so damn fun! It's hard to remember when you're in it but Main Character Energy let's you step outside the situation and see things with new eyes - even if just for a moment. That kind of perspective can change the game and shift how you manage the very normal ups and downs of life.
4. Finding the Humour: My favourite movies are dark and funny and dramatic all at once. Being able to find a moment of giggles, even in the hardest situations is a GIFT. Main Character Energy makes the space for laughter and lightheartedness in all of the above situations and so many more.
Try it on for size this month and then come on over to instagram and tell me what happens!
